My MFA thesis film, GARDENERS, is a fantasy/drama film about Jingmei, a burned-out chemical engineering PhD student who, on the brink of a breakdown, encounters a quirky mushroom musician and discovers a breakthrough in her nano-landscape. Inspired by Dr. Jessica Yue Wang’s research on organic semiconductors, the film celebrates her discovery of nano-flower-shaped crystals. Gardeners explores the intersection of science and art, with Dr. Wang's philosophy that science is her medium for artistic expression. Filmed in real UCLA labs, the film is a haiku to the beauty of the invisible and the joy and creativity of scientists-artists in the world.
