‘Fluid’ is a proof-of-concept short for a queer horror feature, that came from seeing a lack of authentic representation in lesbian horror. The amount of queer female stories I see in the genre space that are directed by men is genuinely staggering. After all, what’s better than one woman in distress? Two women in distress! And they’re kissing! With ‘Fluid’ and the work I intend to make after, I wish to tell stories that yes, are gory, psychological, and thrilling, but are simultaneously authentic to my lesbian experience and filmed through a feminine lens.

Brianna Russell is a filmmaker and playwright originally from Newfoundland, Canada. Her work focuses on queerness in media, genre filmmaking, as well as the history and folklore of her childhood home. Brianna’s proof-of-concept short POSTER CHILD premiered at the Closing Night Gala of SJIWFF, and was a finalist in the CBC Short Film Face Off. She is alumni of festivals such as the National Film Festival for Talented Youth, Blood in the Snow Film Festival, and the Atlantic Internatinal Film Festival. Brianna is the 2022 recipient of the RBC Michelle Jackson Emerging Filmmaker Award, an alumni of the WIDC Career Advancement Module, and a participant in the 2024 Whistler Film Festival Screenwriters Lab.
