En esta conversación, moderada por Carlos Gutiérrez de Cinema Tropical, tres de los más prestigiosos productores del cine latinoamericano – Benjamín Domenech de Argentina (Zama, Manto de gemas), Fernando Epstein y Agustina Chiarino de Uruguay (Monos, Las herederas) – nos contarán cómo la región de Latinoamérica ha podido crear una cinematografía vital y dinámica, compartiendo su experiencia profesional como productores destacados del cine Latinoamericano.
EL PROGRAMA INTERNACIONAL DE SUNDANCE INSTITUTE
En 1990, el Programa de Feature Film (FFP) de Sundance Institute se comprometió a apoyar un intercambio y diálogo vibrante entre culturas, incluyendo el trabajo de cineastas internacionales como parte del trabajo principal del programa. Los programas de FFP se han enriquecido con el desarrollo de artistas y proyectos que están profundamente arraigados en la historia personal y cultural de las voces cinematográficas del mundo. Durante estos años, los programas de FFP han apoyado a numerosos artistas premiados de más de ochenta países a través de sus programas para guionistas y directores, su apoyo creativo y estratégico durante todo el año de apoyo, y programas de becas. Actualmente, el Programa Internacional está construyendo un programa de varios años en Latinoamérica, África y MENA para apoyar a los artistas que trabajan en la realización de películas de ficción y no ficción, episódicos, y formatos de medios emergentes. A través de Sundance Collab, la plataforma digital comunitaria de Sundance Institute, el Programa Internacional está organizando seminarios de web en vivo con cineastas latinoamericanos reconocidos en idioma español y pronto brindará oportunidades de aprendizaje en árabe.
CINEMA TROPICAL
Con sede en la ciudad de Nueva York, Cinema Tropical es el principal presentador de cine latinoamericano en los Estados Unidos. Creado en el 2001 con la misión de distribuir, programar y promocionar lo que se convertiría en el boom más grande del cine latinoamericano en décadas, Cinema Tropical trajo al público estadounidense algunas de las primeras funciones de películas tales como Amores perros e Y tu mamá también. A través de una diversidad de programas e iniciativas, Cinema Tropical está prosperando como una dinámica y pionera organización sin fines de lucro que está experimentando en la creación de más y mejores estrategias de distribución y exhibición para el cine extranjero en los Estados Unidos. En 2011 y 2021, El Museo de Arte Moderno de Nueva York rindió tributo a Cinema Tropical en ocasión de su décimo y vigésimo aniversario con dos ciclos de cine retrospectivos.

Cinema in Latin America from the Perspective of the Producers
Sundance Collab in collaboration with the Sundance Institute International Program and Cinema Tropical, presents a new online event in our Spanish-language series.
In this conversation moderated by Carlos Gutiérrez of Cinema Tropical, four of today's most prestigious Latin American film producers – Benjamín Domenech from Argentina (Zama, Robe of Gems), Nicolás Celis from Mexico (Roma, Prayers for the Stolen), and Fernando Epstein y Agustina Chiarino from Uruguay (Monos, The Heiresses) – will tell us how Latin America has been able to create a vital and dynamic cinema, sharing their professional experience as prominent film producers of Latin American cinema.
ABOUT THE SUNDANCE INSTITUTE INTERNATIONAL PROGRAM
In 1990, Sundance Institute’s Feature Film Program made a commitment to support a vibrant exchange and dialogue across cultures by including the work of international filmmakers as part of its core program. The FFP Labs have been enriched by developing artists and projects that are deeply rooted in the personal and cultural history of filmmaking voices from all over the world. During these years, the FFP has supported numerous award-winning artists from over eighty countries through U.S.-based Labs for Screenwriters and Directors, customized, year-round creative and strategic support, and fellowship programs. Currently, the International Program is building a multi-year program in Latin America, Africa and MENA to support artists working across fiction and non-fiction filmmaking, as well as episodic and emerging media formats. Through Sundance Collab, Sundance Institute’s community digital platform, the International Program is organizing live webinars with leading Latin American filmmakers in Spanish language, and will soon provide learning opportunities in Arabic.
ABOUT CINEMA TROPICAL
New York-based Cinema Tropical is the leading presenter of Latin American cinema in the United States. Founded in 2001 with the mission of distributing, programming, and promoting what has become the largest boom of Latin American cinema in decades, CT brought U.S. audiences some of the first screenings of films such as Amores perros and Y tu mamá también. Through a diversity of programs and initiatives, CT is thriving as a dynamic and groundbreaking 501(c)(3) non-profit media arts organization experimenting in the creation of better and more effective strategies for the distribution, exhibition, and support of foreign cinema and its communities in this country. In 2021 and 2011, coinciding with Cinema Tropical’s 20th and 10th anniversaries, respectively, the Museum of Modern Art paid tribute to the organization with two retrospective series.

Carlos A. Gutiérrez es cofundador y director ejecutivo Cinema Tropical, la organización sin fines de lucro con sede en Nueva York, líder en la presentación de cine latinoamericano en los Estados Unidos. Como curador ha presentado diversos ciclos de cine en varias instituciones culturales entre ellas el Museo de Arte Moderno de Nueva York, el Museo Guggenheim, Film at Lincoln Center, Film at BAM, y Anthology Film Archives. Él fue co-curador de la 53a edición del Seminario de Cine Robert Flaherty en el 2007, es actualmente director artístico del festival de cine Latin Wave del Museo de Bellas Artes de Houston y co-director de la serie Cinema Tucson en Arizona. Es miembro del consejo directivo de Film Forum y ha participado como miembro del jurado para varios festivales incluyendo Morelia, Nueva Orleans, Mar del Plata, SANFIC, Seattle, Ashland, Margaret Mead y DocsMX. Asimismo, ha fungido como nominador y panelista para el Fondo de Cine Documental de Sundance, el Fondo para Cine Latinoamericano del Instituto de Cine de Tribeca y la Iniciativa Artística Rolex para Mentores y Discípulos.

Carlos A. Gutiérrez is co-founder and executive director of Cinema Tropical, the New York-based media arts non-profit organization that has become the leading presenter of Latin American cinema in the U.S. As a guest curator, he has presented several film/video series at different cultural institutions, including the Museum of Modern Art, Film at Lincoln Center, the Guggenheim Museum, Film at BAM, and Anthology Film Archives. In 2007, he co-curated the 53rd edition of the Robert Flaherty Film Seminar and currently serves as artistic director of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston’s Latin Wave film festival and as co-director of the Cinema Tucsón series. He is a member of Film Forum’s Board of Directors, and has served as a member of the jury for various film festivals including Morelia, New Orleans, Mar del Plata, SANFIC, Seattle, Ashland, Margaret Mead, and DocsMX. He has served as both expert nominator and panelist for the Sundance Documentary Fund, the Tribeca Film Institute’s Latin America Media Arts Fund, and the Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative.

Benjamin Domenech es un productor argentino y fundador de Rei Pictures, el sello latinoamericano enfocado en el desarrollo, producción y financiamiento de películas, televisión y contenido interactivo para una audiencia internacional. Benjamin Domenech (he/him, produced by) is an Argentine producer and founder of Rei Pictures, a Latin American powerhouse focused in developing, producing and financing films, television and interactive content for an international audience. His producing credits include films by top tier talent such as: Lucrecia Martel (Zama), Marcela Said (The Dogs), Valeria Bertuccelli (The Queen of Fear), Gonzalo Tobal (The Accused) Natalia Meta (The Intruder) and duo Laura Guzmán & Israel Cárdenas (Holy Beasts, Sand Dollars), and Natalia López Gallardo (Berlinale's Silver Bear Jury Award winner, Robe of Gems) among others. Benjamin lives in Buenos Aires, is a member of the AMPAS (Oscars®), IFP, EAVE and the Argentine Academy, and has been invited to serve on several international festival juries.

Fernando Epstein es un productor y editor cinematográfico reconocido, con más de 40 créditos de películas latinoamericanas. Nació en 1969 en Montevideo, Uruguay. Estudió Comunicación Social en la Universidad Católica de Uruguay y poco después de graduarse comenzó a trabajar como editor entre la era analógica y la digital.
En 2001 fundó Control Z Films para producir y distribuir largometrajes y cortometrajes como WHISKEY de Juan Pablo Rebella y Pablo Stoll, THE DOG POUND de Manuel Nieto, ACNE de Federico Veiroj, GIGANTE de Adrián Biniez, HIROSHIMA de Pablo Stoll, y 3 de Pablo Stoll. Muchas de estas películas recibieron premios en Cannes, Berlín, y Rotterdam, entre otros festivales.
En 2011, cofundó Mutante Cine con Agustina Chiarino, una nueva compañía de producción de cine enfocada en el descubrimiento de nuevos talentos y entrenamiento audiovisual. Con Mutante Cine, Fernando co-produjo y distribuyó EL 5 Y THE WAVES de Adrián Biniez, el documental MADNESS ON AIR de Alicia Cano y Leticia Cuba, HISTORY OF FEAR de Benjamin Nahistat, MY FRIEND FROM THE PARK de Ana Katz, BENZINHO de Gustavo Pizzi, LAS HEREDERAS de Marcelo Martinessi, ALELÍ de Leticia Jorge, y Monos de Alejandro Landes.
También se ha desempeñado como consultor de edición para varias producciones latinoamericanas y como profesor, enseñando Producción Ejecutiva de Cine en ECU (Escuela de Cine del Uruguay), Universidad ORT, UCUDAL (Universidad Católica de Uruguay) y EICTV (Escuela Internacional de Cine y Cine). Tanto con Control Z Films como con Mutante Cine, Fernando lideró el estreno en salas y la distribución comercial en Uruguay de todas sus producciones y coproducciones, y como editor cinematográfico ha editado todos los largometrajes que ha producido.
Más recientemente, produjo el largometraje colombiano Monos de Alejandro Landes, que ganó un Premio Especial del Jurado en el Festival de Cine de Sundance 2019, el Premio del Público en el Festival de Cine de Cartagena y Mejor Película en el Festival de Cine de Londres, entre otros. Fue lanzado en los EE. UU., Canadá, España, Reino Unido, Italia, Francia y otros 15 territorios.

Fernando Epstein is an award winning producer and film editor, with more than 40 credits of Latin American films. He was born in 1969 in Montevideo, Uruguay. He studied Social Communication at the Catholic University of Uruguay and soon after graduating started working as an editor in between the analogue and digital era.
In 2001, he founded Control Z Films to produce and distribute both feature and short films such as WHISKY by Juan Pablo Rebella and Pablo Stoll, THE DOG POUND by Manuel Nieto, ACNE by Federico Veiroj, GIGANTE by Adrián Biniez, HIROSHIMA by Pablo Stoll, and 3 by Pablo Stoll. Many of these films received awards at Cannes, Berlin, and Rotterdam, among other festivals.
In 2011, he co-founded Mutante Cine with Agustina Chiarino, a new production company focused on the discovery of new talent with a strong focus in audiovisual training, where he co-produced and distributed EL 5 Y THE WAVES from Adrián Biniez, the documentary MADNESS ON AIR from Alicia Cano and Leticia Cuba, HISTORY OF FEAR from Benjamin Nahistat, MY FRIEND FROM THE PARK from Ana Katz, BENZINHO from Gustavo Pizzi, THE HEIRESSES from Marcelo Martinessi, Alelí from Leticia Jorge, and MONOS from Alejandro Landes.
He has also worked as an editing consultant for several Latin American productions and as a professor, teaching Executive Film Production at ECU (Escuela de Cine del Uruguay), ORT University, UCUDAL (Catholic University of Uruguay) and EICTV (International School of Film and Television, San Antonio de los Baños, Cuba).
With both Control Z Films and Mutante Cine, Fernando led the theatrical release and commercial distribution in Uruguay for all his productions and coproductions, and as a film editor, he has edited all the feature films he has produced.
Most recently, he produced the Colombian feature MONOS by Alejandro Landes which won a Special Jury Prize at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival, the Audience Award at the Cartagena Film Festival, and Best Film at the London Film Festival, among others. It was released in the US, Canada, Spain, UK, Italy, France and 15 other territories.

Agustina Chiarino es una productora uruguaya reconocida con más de 15 largometrajes latinoamericanos que se han estrenado en unos de los festivales de cine más prestigiosos del mundo, han obtenido más de 100 premios internacionales, y se han estrenado en más de 30 territorios.
Desde 2007, es socia y productora ejecutiva de Control Z Films donde produjo los largometrajes GIGANTE de Adrián Biniez, HIROSHIMA Y 3 de Pablo Stoll, y TANTA AGUA de Ana Guevara y Leticia Jorge. Agustina Chiarino is a renowned Uruguayan producer with more than 15 Latin American feature films that have premiered in some of the most prestigious film festivals worldwide, have obtained more than 100 international prizes, and have been released in over 30 territories.
Since 2007 she has been an executive producer and partner at Control Z Films in which she produced the feature films GIGANTE by Adrián Biniez, Hiroshima and 3 by Pablo Stoll, and TANTA AGUA by Ana Guevara and Leticia Jorge. In 2011, she set up the film production company Mutante Cine with Fernando Epstein through which they produced and distributed EL 5 Y THE WAVES from Adrián Biniez, the documentary MADNESS ON AIR from Alicia Cano and Leticia Cuba, HISTORY OF FEAR from Benjamin Nahistat, MY FRIEND FROM THE PARK from Ana Katz, BENZINHO from Gustavo Pizzi, THE HEIRESSES from Marcelo Martinessi, ALELÍ from Leticia Jorge, and MONOS from Alejandro Landes.
