I wanted to experiment with writing characters, inspired by friends and intriguing acquaintances, into a fictional, intuitively feminist story—involving a child protagonist—shot partially as a documentary, and partially as narrative. (I love both.) By casting actors and non-actors into these roles, I aimed to construct a sincere world in which the narrative could unfold in documentary style, on and off set. I have a curious obsession with death and the ways it’s presented culturally, along with the existential social nature of how One performs for “Others.” This film allowed me to explore both ideas while working with a small budget/crew.
