About this submission

Visually merging ancestral traditions with modern interpretations. During a time of political unrest in the insulated promenade of New Orleans, during Carnival season, we explore the inner workings of an tourist based economy and exploitative art market. How can economics destroy culture? What version of history will remain? And most importantly, can a white curator do justice to African art? “Beyond the Mask” leans heavily on engagement with local communities, cultural organizations, and stakeholders as characters to the story. While the conversation of innovation and institutions expanding, the best time to produce this story is now.
