About this submission

Beauty Standards, a home-shopping network segment, showcases a surreal and visually terrifying spin on beauty products from our teenage memories. Directed by Toni-Marie Gallardo, Rosalee Bernabe, Joi Purvy, and Seo Yun Son, this high-camp horror anthology film explores the traumatic effects of eurocentric beauty standards on teenage girls of color. Each vignette, or “commercial”, re-imagines elements of pop culture from the 70’s to the early-2000’s through a personal lens. Created by Toni-Marie Gallardo, this dream-like experimental film subverts traditional story-telling to make radically empathetic content.
