Even as a Black New Mexican, I was never taught about Blackdom in school. Blackdom, unfortunately, like many Black American stories, has been overlooked, lost, and improperly documented. The town of Blackdom fits in with the Exoduster movement; however, the study of the Exoduster Movement has mostly focused on Oklahoma and Kansas, with little mention of New Mexico as a destination for people migrating from the South.
My goal is to tell the forgotten history of Blackdom and highlight the significant contributions of Black homesteaders who came to New Mexico to form Blackdom.
