Even though my parents are Chinese immigrants, I grew up in Canada speaking English as my primary language, and I've always felt a disconnect with Chinese culture, particularly through language—my Mandarin is passable at best, and I've always had the sense that I've let my family down simply because I can't communicate with them properly. This film was my way of exploring that feeling. I also wanted to experiment with telling a cultural story through horror—gory, violent horror, specifically—as I feel that stories centred around cultural identity (especially East Asian cultures) are often stuck within drama.
