In Queens, eighteen-year-old Mayumi lives with her devout Catholic grandmother, Lola, while her mother remains in the Philippines. When Lola discovers Mayumi’s secret romance with Clara, a carefree Filipina-American girl, their relationship fractures. Condemned for what Lola calls a Western corruption, Mayumi runs to the roof to escape, caught between longing for love and the guilt of faith. By morning, she learns that Clara has moved on, and returns home defeated. There, Lola prays in silence until Mayumi breaks down beside her. In an unspoken moment of forgiveness, Lola embraces her granddaughter.
