Completed in 2025, Amateur: A Jamestown Story follows three Ghanaian amateur boxers and their coach as they compete for places on the national team and pursue qualification for the 2024 Olympics. I chose to tell this story because Jamestown, one of Accra’s oldest districts shaped by the history of James Fort, colonial trade, and long-standing community institutions, has produced generations of fighters whose discipline reflects the area’s resilience. Boxing here is structure and survival. This is chapter one of three and establishes the historical and social context that grounds the larger story that develops throughout the full feature.
