Otty grows up in a dysfunctional queer household in 2008. Her two moms manage gay parenting responsibilities (Eg. explaining artificial insemination at the local taqueria), but struggle to maintain a happy relationship. Otty’s one wish is to adopt a cat.
The 2008 election looms, introducing political messages at home and school. Proposition 8, which would repeal gay couples’ right to marry, is on the ballot. As family tensions escalate, the election arrives, and Prop 8 passes.
Ultimately, Otty must deal with the question of her family’s personal and political future, and most importantly, whether they’ll adopt a cat.
