The Mermaid & The Artist is a tale exploring the male gaze. A lonely and uninspired artist spies a mermaid on Brighton beach and becomes obsessed by her image and body. Endeavouring to capture her in his art he descends into dreams and nightmares. However the mermaid has thoughts and ideas of her own brewing as she sits on her rock. This story subverts the classical siren tale and explores the female body as an objectified muse. It draws upon ancient folklore, greek myths and preraphelite stories of exploited female muses but shifts them to a fresh and bold perspective.
