About this submission

In a small New Mexico town, two men who are not looked upon well by local society—a homeless man, Bart, and an Iraqi immigrant, Hassan—cautiously form a friendship at the library. The senior librarian, Olivia, resents Bart for coming in to use the bathroom every morning, and the assistant librarian, Yvette, is suspicious of Hassan for working on the library’s computer in Arabic. When Olivia calls in her security guard nephew, Rafael, to come in on his lunch hour from his other job “just to make sure,” people slowly get to know each other, and actually band together when Hassan faces deportation because he is mistaken for another Arab with the same name.
