Safe Passage: The Genealogy of Light is a film that meditates with my family VHS tape and the precious memories it keeps. This film explores the intergenerational deterioration of an image and confronts the inevitability of memory decay. Within a greater diasporic context, my work practices filmmaking as a method of embracing an ambiguous past. Tracing the genealogy of this tape parallel to my own has taught me that histories are bound to the materials they are documented on. For this reason this film engages with materials of memory as a practice of honoring the past and artfully remembering.
