About this submission
A Native American pastor is at dinner with his family at a time of great reverence for his people. He does not recognize this sacred time, in doing so invites an unwanted guest.
“Among the Other” is my attempt as a Native American to capture the multiple layers of being a contemporary Native American. “Among the Other” makes comments about the ongoing war of thought, religion, spirituality, and ways of life that continue long after the musket fire and plagues stop. This war happens in the minds, hearts, words, and dinner tables of many Native American peoples, sometimes shots are fired without warning. Sometimes what gets invited into our homes are not people, but grief, memories, or things that have no name.
