About this submission
Kinky tells a story of Maybelline, a Brooklyn teen who straightens her hair against her mother's wishes. Maybelline is left to decide if she wants to remain straight or go back to her natural state to win back her mother’s respect. Maybelline struggles to love her natural kinks and coils, despite reassurance from her mother, who is a proud natural. Yielding to the pressures of eurocentric beauty standards and her insecurities, Maybelline damages her kinky strands to mirror her fine-haired peers. Kinky visualizes a coming-of-age narrative that reflects the experiences of Black women past and present.
