About this submission
Lockdown gave me a lot of time to think. I began questioning my role as a young woman, particularly the feeling that I can’t locate where my own wants and needs end, and where society’s influences begin. Once I learned that this feeling originates from an actual phenomenon termed ‘heteronormativity’, I started to realise how prevalent it is in most contexts.
I made Mars because I wanted to explore the effects of a heteronormative agenda and what is implicitly expected of us; how these expectations shape – or rather contort – us into being someone we don’t want to be.
