About this submission
"Heatwave" is a retrospective on my adolescence during the humid late-summers of North Carolina: a contemplative reflection of my coming-out in relation to the tension between my mother and myself. I strove to give voice to individuals who've experienced those sharp jolts of disconnect with their parent because of the guardedness with which they shield their sexuality. I chose to tell a story with a gay protagonist where the fear of coming out doesn't lie in school bullies, romance, or religious values, but rather from the inevitable . "Heatwave" is an exploration of how difficult revealing one's self is.
