About this submission
Sonideros are more than Mexican DJs, almost MCs. Songs with greetings, which tell stories as heartbreaking as the ones of the people dancing. Before the internet, people would buy a cassette with the recorded set of the party. To send these tapes to their loved ones back home and could dance and sing thousands of miles away to the same songs. In NYC, they would find cumbias, parties, gangs, and be forced to drink to remember the life they left behind. Only returning to Mexico in their dreams, because of their undocumented status, a reality check for the "American dream."
