About this submission

Step inside Compline at Christ Church. Breathe in the incense. Hear the chanting. Feel the vibrations. Compline is a 25-minute Sunday night service with no preaching or teaching. Instead, participants sit in a candle-lit church and listen to a distant chorus chant traditional Latin hymns. The four subjects of "Compline" are among the hundreds who have used Compline as a way to reconnect with spirituality—including many queer people who feel excluded from traditional religion. "Compline" examines the conflicts inherent in a queer-friendly space that relies on the images, sounds, and smells of deeply conservative faith to produce a “spiritual-but-not-religious” experience.
