About this submission

Combat Breathing asks the question: what kind of breathing makes survival possible. It is reactive breathing, breathing shaped by the violence experienced, breathing that knows that there is a “desire for [our] breathing to be in chorus with everyone who has ever loved Black women, everyone who has ever decided that the freedom of Black women could be palpable and possible, I want it to be breathing in chorus, and I knew that that would be how I could breathe beyond just responding to violence or the violence that has shaped my experience.” (Alexis Pauline Gumbs)

Stella Rae Binion is a poet & filmmaker from Chicago, IL. She is based currently in providence, RI studying Literary Arts and Modern Culture & Media at Brown University.
