Summer, 1930: Conchartee,. Oklahoma, simmers quietly. The arrival of a carload of mail-order catalogs trigger mix-up, mayhem, then murder. Residents’ use, abuse, or failure to receive everyday items--hair dye, a bicycle, panties--provoke a seriocomic avalanche. Violent bigots, overwhelmed lawmen, an ideologue newspaperman, an idealistic postmaster, a wannabe adulteress and a hapless mailman unwittingly brew tragicomedy.
