When I read Le Fanu’s gothic novella “Carmilla,” I was deeply captivated by the story and wanted to adapt it into a short. A modern take on a classic lesbian vampire tale, this film wrestles with notions of closeted homosexuality and the resulting proclivity towards masochism. Carmilla opens up a dialogue for these complicated and uncomfortable notions, aiming not to provide answers, but to challenge its audience. This film does not shy away from the darkness. It is sexy, scary, and I believe, an important story to tell.
