About this submission

A local homeless man, J.C., sets up what he refers to as his ‘shop,’ a chess board and two plastic crates, on the corner of 53rd St. on the South Side of Chicago and waits for locals to stop by and play a game with him. He says he is a “98 percent winner,” and plays about 30 games a day. 98 Percent His chess shop has become a staple of the Hyde Park neighborhood and almost everyone who lives in the community has either played a game of chess with him, or stopped for a quick, friendly conversation.
